Ever wanted to have a task-list that you could easily synchronize between several environments — AND have it easily accessible on your desktop all the time? Well, look no more.
This article will walk you through setting up an easy-to-use task list (Remember The Milk) right on your windows desktop.
Step one: Get an RTM account
The first step will be getting a Remember the Milk account, if you haven’t already. This is pretty easy (and free!) — you just need to head on over to their sign-up page and sign up for an account.
Step two: Add the Active Desktop item
Next, you’ll need to right-click on your desktop and select ‘Properties’. You should have a window called ‘Display Properties’ pop-up, with the ‘Themes’ tab selected automatically. Click on the ‘Desktop’ tab.
On the Deskop tab, click the ‘Customize Desktop…’ button (hint: It’s at the bottom of the page). You should have a window called ‘Desktop Items’ pop-up, with the ‘General’ tab selected automatically. Click the ‘Web’ tab.

On the ‘Web’ tab, you’ll see a list of Active Desktop items that have already been setup and can be shown/hidden on your desktop. (Most likely, you’ll just see a single item in the list, “My Current Home Page” that is unselected).
Click the “New…” button and enter the following URL in the “Location:” textbox that appears:
http://rememberthemilk.com/services/modules/googleig/

Press “OK” on each of the 3 window layers to finally go back to your desktop. You should now see a window on your desktop for your task list that looks something like this:

Tips:
- Use Internet Explorer and login to Remember the Milk, selecting the option to ‘Remember me on this computer’
- You can move the Active Desktop Window around by dragging the title bar that appears when you hover over the window

This is the second time that I’ve seen you mention “Remember The Milk” so I’ve gone ahead and followed your amazingly accurate instructions and installed it. I do have a problem that the desktop widget doesn’t appear to want to log in. Might be because my browser defaults to Firefox.

Here’s what I’ve found out: It’s vitally important that you sign in through Internet Explorer at least once, and be sure to check the ‘remember me’ checkbox on the login screen.
Active Desktop uses Internet Explorer to render to connect to the sites and render the HTML, so that’s why you need to use IE at least once.

That must have been it. It eventually started working and I don’t recall what I did but I’m pretty sure that I probably signed in with IE once during that problem solving phase. Thanks again.
